What Is The Inside Out Understanding?

The human brain is often compared to a computer. Many believe that some people’s computer is more powerful (higher IQ) than others. But the main difference between people is within the software- the programming they run.

These programs that we run include both “apps” (the strategies we use) and the “deeper programs” (our beliefs and values). Some of these apps are so embedded that we believe they are factory installed and unchangeable.

In the same way most computers have a version of Microsoft Office installed, most people adopt the majority of beliefs and values from the culture in which they live.

But what’s far more important to a computer’s effectiveness is the firmware- the BIOS (built-in operating system). Nothing runs without interfacing with the BIOS.

When it comes to human beings, the basic operating principle is:

100% of your experience of life is created from inside the system.

While most people believe that they are a product of outside circumstances, the truth is, the only way the human experience can unfold is from the Inside-Out. No exceptions. The system only works one way. The clarity of our seeing that underpins the way we handle absolutely every situation in our lives.

Consider this example:

Imagine you are awakened by the sound of your child screaming in the middle of the night. You run into their bedroom and find that there is no immediate danger, but the child is still very much afraid. They tell you that there’s a monster at the end of the bed. When you look towards the end of the bed, there is  in fact something at the end of their bed.

A closer look reveals that it’s simply the shadow of a toy that had been sitting on the window sill, brought to life by the moonlight streaming in behind it.

To your child, who believes the monster is real, their only choice is to cover their face or run through a limited menu of problem-solving strategies that range from hiding under the covers, to seeing if they can outrun the monster and you, hoping that the monster will eat you instead and leave them alone.

But since you recognize that the “monster” is only the shadow of their toy, you’re not inclined to do anything to make it go away. You understand the nature of light and shadow, and you know that the minute the light changes, the “monster” will transform back into the toy, or disappear completely.

Whether the “monsters” in our lives seem to be made of health challenges, relationships, money, work issues, or things that happened to us in the past- the same is true for us. The more we are able to understand the principles behind how our experience of life is being created moment by moment, the more freedom and creativity we’ll have in how we operate in the world.

In order to understand this better, let’s take a closer look at what the fundamental principles are…
